JunkanooNearYou

Junkanoo is an expression of Bahamian culture. It's now the national festival of the Bahamas and has its roots traced back to West Africa. It is celebrated year round in the Bahamas. Junkanoo is simply a gift given to a people by their ancestors.

The rhythmic yet powerful sounds of Junkanoo are produced by traditional Bahamian instruments for example, the goat skin drum or Goombay drum, and cowbells. The costumes of Junkanoo in modern times are comprised of several basic materials, cardboard, metals (aluminum), crepe paper for color, glitter, rhinestones and glass for decorations.

JunkanooNearYou is an entity committed to exposing the world to Junkanoo. The aim is to carry a major portion of Bahamian culture (Junkanoo) to the world. The group originated in Tallahassee Florida at Florida A & M University in 1996. The current group consists of University graduates and current students that reside in Orlando, Florida.
